Job Title:  Child Law Paralegal (with bias to Social Welfare)

Location: North Devon

Salary: Depending on experience

Job Specification:

We are looking to recruit a paralegal to join our niche award winning dedicated Family Law firm.  This is a full time position on a 12 month fixed term contract.  We service a client base with a high volume of Learning Disabled and/or vulnerable clients with experience of domestic, sexual or criminal abuse and with multiple difficulties including mental health and addictions. The person we seek must have great empathy, maturity and ability to provide “solution focussed” guidance to clients whilst supporting the solicitors with general case management.

Applicants must have a good knowledge of Children Law and practice either as a paralegal or  in a related field (such as as a Community, Social or other care worker or advice worker). 

 

Knowledge and experience of family court, it’s rules and procedures is desirable but not necessary.  Law Degree/LPC (with family modules) expected for legal applicants. Experience of running a caseload,whether in the in voluntary sector, or legal sector, is desirable.

Essential skills/attributes

  • Experience of working in a Law Firm, Social Welfare environment (Adult or Children Services), Law Centre, Community Care, Addiction /Mental Health services, Welfare/Housing advice.
  • Excellent oral and written communication – ability to think in creative ways to support vulnerable clients by adapting communication styles, approach and manner appropriately, empathetically and/or compassionately and supportively.
  • Willing to adapt to and adopt the firms central tenets, procedures and ethos and to work in progressive environment without undermining the same
  • Excellent professional, peer and client relations – A team player, a personable person who will work in an empathetic and supportive way with colleagues and clients and support the practices aims to deliver excellence in client service to clients and to colleagues and create a harmonious office environment with a forward thinking approach and a buzz.
  • High level of ability to work with minimal supervision in non-legal client support arena.
  • Ability to accept delegation and supervision of work in all legal work.
  • Highly organised, able to prioritise and delegate (where appropriate).
  • Ability to adopt a commercial approach to work and ensure that profit levels are achieved.
  • Ability to use IT to a high level.
  • A fast and accurate typist/keyboard inputter.
  • An organised individual who can keep up to speed with filing and time recording (critical)
  • Ability to understand the SRA requirements on accounts/financial controls and office and client account – with training if necessary.
  • Ability to attend to detail and accuracy particularly in file opening so that files are opened on system in a systematic way, without errors in accordance with the firm’s procedures etc
  • Willingness to work under the direction of a number of solicitors and to work in a team based environment.
  • Able to diarise key dates and identify which aspects of the case management can be diarised for Advocate fee earners and which can be reserved to non-advocate assistants and able to manage this in tandem with the fee earner to ensure no gaps in service and attention to detail.
  • Able to check ahead in diaries and ensure clients and fee earners are alerted to key dates and reminded of the same eg expert appointments, court hearings, professionals meetings and appointments.
  • Able to identify problems and solve them – using initiative but always seeking guidance and supervision where appropriate.
  • Flexibility -  able to pick up and run with a problem whether legal, practical, ethical etc and to seek guidance, supervision and support in an effective manner and get the best result for the firm and client
  • No prior history of investigation which left person found wanting by the police, SRA or other professional body – full disclosure of professional disciplinary action/sanctions and/or criminal convictions is required on an ongoing basis of any conviction/ disciplinary action/sanction.
  • Willingness to discuss any client complaints to the firm, SRA and other professional bodies  and how handled/resolved.

Desirable skills/attributes

  • Intimate knowledge of LSC (legal aid) rules as they relate to family law
  • Understanding and practice of legal aid accounts rules in an assistant role
  • greater consideration going to someone working currently in a family law department of a law firm with experience of legal aid and Care proceedings or demonstrating a high level of transferrable skills from another linked profession relevant to the job description and client base.
  • Clean driving licence (and/or disclosure of any matters)

The salary for this position is dependent on experience.
