Finding Support in Okehampton
Posted on 27th March 2025 at 17:46
When faced with legal issues, knowing where to turn to for help can be overwhelming. Now we’ve settled into our office on East Street, Okehampton, we wanted to share the local resources available in the community for those seeking legal advice or support.
Rosie Bracher Solicitors and Legal Aid
We opened our Okehampton office in January 2024 and offer the full range of family law services. Sometimes, there is a concern about the cost related to instructing a solicitor. We offer a free legal aid assessment for individuals with lower incomes, without savings or realisable assets to help you access legal representation. We are the only legal aid provider in Okehampton and its surrounding areas, you can learn more about how legal aid works here.
Our legal support includes matters relating to children, domestic abuse, adoption and we also specialise in highly complex and high asset value divorce. Jade Payne, managing the Okehampton office, is a specialist divorce and matrimonial finance solicitor with a particular interest in issues around farming, businesses and pensions.
Whilst our job is to provide legal advice throughout your family proceedings, we may point you in the direction of other support services depending on your circumstances.
Citizens Advice at the Ockment Centre
The Ockment Centre is based on North Street, Okehampton and connects with a number of local charities to provide services and events to the local community.
Torridge, North, Mid and West Devon Citizens Advice is located in the Ockment Centre and has a drop in service for general advice on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Citizen’s advice is a national charity that offers advice, education and support for those in need. For questions around housing, debt, immigration or health services, Citizen’s advice is a free, confidential service that can help advise you while you work through the issues you are facing.
If you are in the midst of family law or other proceedings, you may also be seeking other types of support outside of legal advice. Depending on your needs, your solicitor can direct you to helpful resources. In Okehampton in particular, there are a number of local services available that may be beneficial to both families and individuals in need of support.
Community Links CIC
Also based in the Ockment Centre, Community Links is a not-for-profit company offering a variety of free and low cost community resources. Practitioners help families with both 1:1 support or with group sessions for parents to explore challenges together. Community Links also organises events, courses and talks that parents may find informative, as well as creating a community for those experiencing the similar difficulties.
Community Links also provides services for individuals, including a mental health support group and a befriending scheme to help with isolation and loneliness.
The Well-Being Cafe
The Well-Being Cafe, based on St James Street is a safe and friendly place for people to access practical support in Okehampton. The cafe opened in 2022 and has a well-being drop-in on Monday evenings for individuals in need of advice, support or someone to talk to.
Courses and peer support groups also run at the cafe throughout the week, including therapeutic sessions and a teen space for 11-17 year olds on Wednesdays and Fridays.
